Year 1 2017 - 2018

Mrs Griffiths

Miss Shaw

Mrs Arnold

Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope you have enjoyed your holidays. The children have been busy and obviously made New Year resolutions to work really hard; there’s been some fantastic work produced already!

Mrs Griffiths will still be teaching Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Miss Shaw will still be teaching on a Thursday and Friday. We also still have Mrs Arnold our teaching assistant. Miss Duncan has gone to another school for her next placement so we would like to welcome Miss Robinson who will be with us until half term on her teaching placement through School’s Direct.

We have been amazed by the effort that has been put into reading. We can see lots of progress and confidence is really growing. The children have enjoyed receiving certificates for their efforts in reading at home so we are continuing with our challenge. We would like to give a certificate to each child for their reading at home. To achieve this they will need to read at least 4 times a week and this needs to be recorded in their reading diary. For each week we achieve a full class of certificates there will be a class reward. We hope you’re ready for the challenge! Reading books will be changed and reading diaries will be checked every Thursday.

Homework will be handed out on a Friday and should be returned completed by Wednesday.

P.E is on a Monday and Thursday. Please ensure your child has their P.E kit in school and that all items are labelled. We encourage children to practise getting dressed at home to help them get changed quickly in school.

This term our topic is ‘Spectacular Space’. We will be investigating the question ‘Why is Neil Armstrong such a brave person?’ so we can explore the lives of significant individuals in Britain's past who have contributed to our nation's achievements. Our topic will kick start with a visit from an astronaut so the children can prepare questions they would like to ask. We are also hoping to visit Spaceport during this term to enrich this topic.

In English we will be using the stories 'Toys in Space' and 'Beegu' as the starting point for a range of writing activities. We will continue to develop basic skills for reading and writing. Phonics takes place outside of the English lesson and this half term we will be practising reading real and alien words in our Read Write Inc sessions to encourage the children to recognise the phonemes they have been taught in words.

In maths, basic maths skills are being taught throughout Year One. We will particularly focus on adding and subtracting within 20, developing our understanding of place value within 50 and measuring length, height, weight and volume. We will be introducing lots of vocabulary which will be reinforced and where possible we will be making links to maths in our everyday lives.

In science we will be looking at shadows and the seasons.

Our RE topic is Kingdom of God where we will be exploring the parable of the mustard seed.
