Year 1 2017 - 2018

Mrs Griffiths

Miss Shaw

Mrs Arnold

Can you believe it is the Summer Term already? We hope you have enjoyed your Easter holidays. We are impressed by the number of children who have been reading regularly at home over the holidays. Thank you for your continued support.

Mrs Griffiths will still be teaching Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Miss Shaw will still be teaching on a Thursday and Friday. We also still have Mrs Arnold our teaching assistant. We have welcomed Miss Duncan back to Year One and she will continue with her teaching placement through School’s Direct.

The children have enjoyed receiving certificates for their efforts in reading at home so we are continuing with our challenge. We would like to give a certificate to each child for their reading at home. To achieve this they will need to read at least 4 times a week and this needs to be recorded in their reading diary. For each week we achieve a full class of certificates there will be a class reward. We hope you’re ready for the challenge! Reading books will be changed and reading diaries will be checked every Thursday. We also have a new reading challenge so the child who reads the most times over the half term will receive a prize.

Homework will be handed out on a Friday and should be returned completed by Wednesday. Phonics homework is to support your child with the phonics screening check which will take place week beginning June 11th.

P.E is on a Monday and Thursday. Please ensure your child has their P.E kit in school and that all items are labelled. We encourage children to practise getting dressed at home to help them get changed quickly in school.

This term our topic is ‘Oh I do like to be beside the seaside. We will be investigating the questions, 'Why do we love to be beside the seaside and what were seaside holidays like when my granny was a little girl?' We will be exploring the seaside town of Llandudno to help us. Our topic will kick start with a seaside themed day at school where children will come to school wearing beach clothes. We are also hoping to visit Llandudno during this term to enrich this topic.

In English we will be using the stories 'Dougal's Deep Sea Diary' and 'Seahorse' as the starting point for a range of writing activities. We will continue to develop basic skills for reading and writing. Phonics takes place outside of the English lesson and this half term we will be practising reading real and alien words in our Read Write Inc sessions to encourage the children to recognise the phonemes they have been taught in words.

In maths, basic maths skills are being taught throughout Year One. We will particularly focus on early multiplication and division through halving, doubling and counting in groups, halves and quarters, position and direction, telling the time and recognising coins. We will be introducing lots of vocabulary which will be reinforced and where possible we will be making links to maths in our everyday lives.

In science we will be looking at plant parts and what they need to grow.

Our RE topic is The Holy Spirit where we will be exploring the story of Pentecost.

Dates for your diary

Phonics screening check to be held week beginning Monday 11th June. Please can you ensure your child is in school as they are unable to complete the check at another date.

Thank you for your continued support. Spring Term was fantastic and we’re sure that Summer Term will be too.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do come and see us.
