Year 1 2020 - 2021
We hope you have all had a lovely Easter and enjoyed time to start seeing some family and friends again. We can’t believe it is the summer term already.
Last term, we were so proud of how well the children all settled back into our usual routines. It has been lovely to be back together, as we missed our wonderful class.
We carried out informal assessments to identify areas of the curriculum that we need to consolidate this term and we will continue to plan additional interventions and booster groups. These groups will be reviewed every 4-6 weeks. As a result of our assessments, we have reorganised our curriculum slightly so we can consolidate and reinforce skills and knowledge.
This term to support our recovery curriculum we will be using the book ‘’Somebody Swallowed Stanley’ by Sarah Roberts. Basic skills for reading and writing are continuing to be developed during Year One and this term there will be lots of opportunities for non-fiction writing about sea animals.
In maths, we have reorganised our long term plan to ensure that the basic skills of number (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) are secure. This means that we will be asking for your help with maths homework to cover position, direction and time. We will focus on reinforcing addition and subtraction, introducing multiplication and division through grouping and sharing, fractions (halves and quarters), money and time (o’clock and half past). Lots of new vocabulary will be introduced and reinforced. We will also be making links to maths in our everyday lives.
In science, we will be exploring plants then covering the Year One RSE (relationships and sex education) curriculum which explores different friends, growing and changing, and families and care.
Please see our summer topic web for further information about what we will be teaching in each subject.
Reading – We will continue to change reading books on a Wednesday. Please ensure reading books and reading diaries are brought to school every day as this helps us to communicate what we have done in guided reading sessions. We are really pleased by the effort the children are putting into reading regularly at home. We will continue to give our reading certificates so please keep up the good work and encourage your child to read regularly. Any books the children read can be recorded in their reading diary; it doesn’t have to be just school reading books. This also helps us see what your child is reading and what they enjoy.
Homework will continue to be handed out on a Friday and should be returned completed by Wednesday. Although the phonics screening assessment that should have taken place towards the end of Year One is no longer taking place, we will continue to teach the skills required and will send phonics homework to support this.
P.E is on a Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure your child has their P.E kit in school and that all items are labelled.
Thank you for all of your support. As always, If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch by emailing email@example.com.
