Year 1 2021 - 2022
Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope you have enjoyed your holidays. The children have been busy and obviously made New Year resolutions to work really hard; there’s been some fantastic work produced already!
We have been amazed by the effort that has been put into reading. We can see lots of progress and confidence is really growing. The children have enjoyed receiving stickers as part of our ‘Read Around the World’ whole school challenge. Thank you for your support with this. We will continue to change reading books and check reading diaries every Tuesday however, if your child wants to change them more frequently they are more than welcome to do this during registration.
Homework will continue to be handed out on a Friday and should be returned completed by Wednesday.
P.E is on a Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure your child has their P.E kit in school and that all items are labelled. We encourage children to practise getting dressed at home to help them get changed quickly in school.
This term in history, we will be investigating the question, ‘What’s changed since your grandparents were young?’
In English, we will be using the stories ‘The Lion Inside’ and ‘The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth’ as the starting point for a range of writing activities. We will continue to develop basic skills for reading and writing. Phonics takes place outside of the English lesson and this half term we will be practising reading real and alien words in our Read Write Inc sessions to encourage the children to recognise the phonemes they have been taught in words.
In maths, basic maths skills are being taught throughout Year One. We will particularly focus on adding and subtracting within 20, developing our understanding of place value within 50 and measuring length, height, weight and volume. We will be reinforcing and introducing lots of vocabulary.
In science, we will be looking at changes across the seasons and everyday materials.
Our RE topics are Judaism where we will be exploring the question of ‘Why is Joseph important to Jewish people?’, Holy Spirit where we will be exploring the question of ‘How did the Holy Spirit change the disciples after the day of Pentecost?’ and Forgiveness exploring ‘Why did Jonah change his mind?’
Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions or concerns, please do come and see us.
