Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope you have enjoyed your holidays. The children have been busy and obviously made New Year resolutions to work really hard; there’s been some fantastic work produced already!

We have been amazed by the effort that has been put into reading. We can see lots of progress and confidence is really growing. The children have enjoyed receiving certificates for their efforts in reading at home so we are continuing with our challenge. We would like to give a certificate to each child for their reading at home. To achieve this they will need to read at least 4 times a week and this needs to be recorded in their reading diary. For each week we achieve a full class of certificates there will be a class reward. We hope you’re ready for the challenge! Reading books will be changed and reading diaries will be checked every Tuesday.

Homework will continue to be handed out on a Friday and should be returned completed by Wednesday.

P.E is on a Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure your child has their P.E kit in school and that all items are labelled. We encourage children to practise getting dressed at home to help them get changed quickly in school.

This term we will be investigating the questions ‘Where would you prefer to live England or Africa?’ and ‘What’s changed since your grandparents were young?’

In English we will be using the stories ‘The Lion Inside’ and ‘The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth’ as the starting point for a range of writing activities. We will continue to develop basic skills for reading and writing. Phonics takes place outside of the English lesson and this half term we will be practising reading real and alien words in our Read Write Inc sessions to encourage the children to recognise the phonemes they have been taught in words.

In maths, basic maths skills are being taught throughout Year One. We will particularly focus on adding and subtracting within 20, developing our understanding of place value within 50 and measuring length, height, weight and volume. We will be introducing lots of vocabulary which will be reinforced and where possible we will be making links to maths in our everyday lives.

In science we will be looking at changes across the seasons and everyday materials.

Our RE topics are Christian Community where we will be exploring the question of ‘How do Christians worship God in church?’, Discipleship where we will be exploring the question of ‘Why did Zacchaeus change when he met Jesus?’ and Forgiveness exploring ‘Why did Jonah change his mind?’.

Dates for your diary

Our class assembly is on Friday 20th March at 9.05am.

Thank you for your continued support. Autumn Term was fantastic and we’re sure that Spring Term will be too.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do come and see us.
