WELCOME

TO

YEAR 1

AUTUMN TERM

We hope you have enjoyed your holidays. We can never believe how quickly they pass. We are so pleased with how well the children are all settling into Year One and we have had a great time getting to know each other whilst getting used to new routines.

In Year One we are lucky to have two class teachers. Mrs Griffiths will be teaching Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Miss Shaw will be teaching on Thursday and Friday. Mrs Arnold is our teaching assistant and we would like to welcome Miss Duncan who will be with us until Christmas on a teaching placement through School’s Direct.

Reading

Your child will be given a set of reading books which will be changed every Thursday. Please ensure reading books and reading diaries are brought to school every day. Children will have lots of opportunities to read and enjoy books throughout the week in school. Guided reading sessions will take place each week and we will also use this time to check reading diaries.

Homework

Homework will be handed out on a Friday and should be returned completed by Wednesday.

P.E

P.E is on a Monday and Thursday. Please ensure your child has their P.E kit in school and that all items are labelled. We encourage children to practise getting dressed at home to help them get changed quickly in school.

This term our topic is The Big Build. We will be investigating similarities and differences between houses now and then in addition to learning to identify different types of house to help us find the answer to the question 'How have homes changed since the Three Little Pigs grandparents were young?' Our topic will kick start with a short tour around the local area to explore houses in Frodsham.

In literacy we will be learning about traditional stories with familiar settings. Basic skills for reading and writing are being developed during Year One. Building words by using the ‘phonics they know’ is the main strategy we encourage for both decoding and writing words. We are using next week to carry out phonic assessments so we can start our Read Write Inc sessions to learn phonics and spellings.

In maths, basic maths skills are being taught throughout Year One. We will particularly focus on counting, more/less, identifying shapes and their properties and simple addition and subtraction. We will be introducing lots of vocabulary which will be reinforced and where possible we will be making links to maths in our everyday lives.

In science we will look at using and sorting, naming and labelling different materials.

Our RE topics are creation and harvest.
