The importance of reading at Frodsham CE

At our school, we believe that reading is the key to unlocking a world of opportunities for our children. Early reading is not just a fundamental skill - it is a lifelong journey that opens doors to imagination, knowledge, and understanding. From the moment our students join us in Nursery or Reception, we nurture their love for books, fostering a joy of reading that will stay with them throughout their lives. We teach our English lessons through read high-quality, beautiful texts that engage and inspire children.

The joy of reading

Every classroom at Frodsham CE has an exciting and inviting book corner, carefully designed to spark curiosity and encourage children to dive into the wonderful world of stories. These cosy spaces are filled with a diverse range of books, from timeless classics to new adventures, ensuring that every child finds something they love. We hold annual Book Fairs and regularly give children the opportunity to change their books. Big and little buddies love spending time reading together and we enjoy having visitors in too. Our staff are passionate about sharing stories; hearing children read; giving them time to read and reading aloud daily to inspire and engage our young readers. We LOVE dressing up each year for World Book Day!

Home reading expectations

We know that regular reading at home is crucial in developing strong reading habits. That’s why we encourage all our children to read at least three times a week with their families - preferably much more. This shared experience not only helps children develop their reading skills but also strengthens the bond between parent and child. Reading diaries should be signed regularly please, by parents or guardians, to track progress and celebrate achievements. If you would like to volunteer to come in to school and read regularly with children, please email the office.

'Read Around the World' challenge

We are excited to promote our whole school 'Read Around the World' challenge, where students can explore different countries and cultures as a result of the books they read. Each night they read at home, they earn ten 'miles' for their house team, and compete to travel the fastest to various destinations around the globe.
