Times Table Challenge
The National Curriculum states that by the end of year 4, pupils should be able to recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12x12.
To support our pupils with their rapid recall of multiplication and division facts we have a times table challenge that runs for every year group from Year 1-6, focusing on multiplication facts (and division where appropriate) linked to their year group objectives. These are named after popular rock groups to link in with our use of TTRockstars, though the map below also indicates which year group the levels relate to.
Throughout the school year, children are encouraged to practise their times tables both in class and at home. Towards the end of each half term, pupils will sit their next level of our times table challenge. This consists of 60 questions related to their level and children are required to complete the challenge within 5 minutes to reflect the timed demands of the statutory multiplication check which takes place in Year 4. If they successfully answer enough questions correctly within the time, they will progress onto the next level. If not, they will continue to practise their current level.
All pupils from Year 2 upwards, also have a log in for Times Table Rockstars - an award-winning maths programme that takes all the worry out of learning times tables and has a proven track record of boosting children’s fluency and recall in multiplication and division. Best progress has been proven with children who accesss their account little and often, so we ask that children log on at least three times weekly for around 10 minutes as part of their homework allocation. Teachers should also remind you about the monthly 'Gig' which every child needs to complete and they may also set a 'Battle of the Bands' session to introduce an element of friendly competition! We also like to enrol our pupils in the national competitions such as 'England Rocks'.
In addition to their weekly TTRockstars practice, the links below provide other interactive activities to help make learning tables fun.
